MUTUAL (Westmoreland Co.)
The recent Westmoreland
County youth livestock raised a
record $99,382, according to sales
officials.
William Kelly, county exten
sion director served as auctioneer
of 272 market animals offered for
sale by the youth.
Justin Fuls, of Rector sold his
1,250-pound grand champion
market steer to Hoss’s Steak and
Sea House for $3.75 per pound,
while Katie Logan, of Irwin sold
her 1,160-pound reserve grand
champion steer for $3.25 per
pound.
While the buyers and prices paid
for the other livestock were not
available Brennen and Kristina
Bierbower, of Latrobe captured
several of the top trophies with the

In addition, Brennen was named
champion swine fitter and show-
man, while Kristina took home the
award for reserve champion in rate
of gain for her market lamb
projects.
In other news, Joanne Logan,
extension agent, said she saw the
fair and the auction as the culmina
tion of a year of work for the youth.
She said that Westmoreland
County’s 4-H program is perhaps
unique in that only one out of 10 of
the 3,000 youth participating in the
program actually live on farms.
In related announcements,
extension director Kelly urged
people to support a recently ini
tiated scholarship fund created in
memory of Cathy Vance, who died
a year ago in a hunting accident
