When Dr. Charles Petty was 10 years old, his family was fragmented. “That's when I learned the importance of family and the need to balance our lives,” said Petty, who since then has spent a lifetime speaking about achieving success at work and at home. Although people recognize that their failure to put any effort in their job would result in immediate unemployment, they don’t seem to comprehend that if they put nothing into their family they will soon end up without a family. “There are no free lunches. You pay the price,” Petty said. He wants spouses to recognize that refusing to deal with small family problems result in bigger problems. “Alimony,” he said, “is like buy ing oats for a dead horse.” The best way to eliminate prob lems at home is to devote time and attention to family members. “Little things make the differ ence. Warm words of praise, a touch, a hug. Bonding happens with touch but do not hug teens in public.” he said. Petty emphasized the need to make time for each individual fam ily member. Group attention is not the same. Avoid lumping children together by saying such comments as "You boys.” While it is important in conver sation to balance fact with feeling, there is a time when you should only concentrate on one or the other.
