Martins Compete For Top Hog At Lampeter Swine Show

tin the grand champion FFA mark
et swine trophy on Wednesday
afternoon at the West Lampeter
Community Fair.
Kurt, IS, son of Bob and Mari
lyn Martin, Strasburg, walked his
hog, a 254-pound Hampshire/
Yorkshire cross, to heavyweight
champion and to supreme champ
ion. The Blue Butt gilt was
obtained from the Frank Feeser
herd in Tannytown, Md.
Kurt said feeding the hog a 16
percent protein and a lot of walk
ing contributed to gamering the
championship.
Kurt competed against strong
competition his brother Keith,
18, showed the medium and light
heavyweight champions. Kurt is a
sophomore at Lancaster Menno
nite High School and Hans Herr
FFA member.
Judge Jim Pariett, Du roc and
Chester White swine breeder from
Airville, said the champion hog
looked “really sound, really lean.”
Pariett chose the hog shown by
4-H member Crystal Charles, 14,
daughter of Cliff and Nancy Char
les, Millersville, as reserve. Pariett
picked the 246-pound York
crossbred shown by Crystal.
Abo, Neil Fellenbaum was cho
sen junior champion showman and
Jason Reifsnyder was chosen
senior showman. Both are Manor
FFA members.

Chosen supreme at the West
Lampeter Community Fair steer
show Wednesday evening, the
steer, a Simmental/Angus/Maine
Anjou cross, was purchased last
October at a special market steer
show at the Harrisburg Farm Show
Complex.
Jay. 19. son of Abe and Janine
Hess. Conestoga, a graduate of
Penn Manor and Manor FFA
member, plans to show at the Farm
Show in January.

from Lebanon, chose the 4-H steer,

steer. Dale, 16. the son of Earl and
Joyce Livengood, Lancaster,
showed his 1,322-pound Angus/
Maine Anjou cross. Dale, a sopho
more at Faith Mennonite, plans to
show at the Farm show in January.
This is his seventh year in 4-H.
In all, there were about 10 steers
and the same number of exhibitors.
