Bollinger Siblings Sweep
LOU ANN GOOD
Lancaster Fanning Staff
NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster
Co.) With their market lambs,
Bollinger siblings swept the New
Holland sheep show, winning both
champion and reserve titles.
It was the first champion market
lamb win for Derick Bollinger,
who showed the 125-pound heavy
weight champion. His sister Tracy
won with the middle weight
champion.
It may have been a bit confusing
to the crowd, because the midde
weight champion was shown by
another sister Amy because Tracy
was interviewing for Farm Show
Queen at Manheim. The results of
the Farm Show contest won’t be
revealed until next week when the
Manheim Farm Show begins.
The three siblings of Eugene
and Carol Bollinger of Manheim
each have several sheep that they
raise for county and state
competitions.
The seasoned sheep exhibitors
have accumulated ribbons and trd
phies for their sheep and swine
with the most recent being Amy’s
reserve champion market lamb
title at last week’s Ephrata show.
Sheep are conditioned by putting
them through daily jumps.
In the breeding sheep competi
tion, Jessica Stoltzfus took the
grand champion breeding sheep
trophy with her Dorset ewe and
Jerry Bollinger showed the reserve
with his Suffolk ram. Both Stolt
zfus and Bollinger took similar
titles recently at Denver and
Ephrata, respectively, with other
sheep. Jerry is a cousin to the Bol
lingers who swept the market lamb
titles. The 19-year-old said that the
reserve is a 7-month-old February
lamb.
Judge Greg Snyder, a former
breeder from Lancaster, said that
he liked Jerry’s real straight, long
lamb but the straightness and styl
ishness of the Dorset ewe that is
structurally square out of her dock
was his pick for champion.
The champion Dorset is one of
the flock of Dorsets that Jessica
raises on the family’s Elizabeth
town farm.
“In my eyes, this is my best
sheep,” Jessica said of the champ
ion named Penny, a previous win
ner at the 4-H Roundup.
Jessica’s parents are Frank and
Irene. Jessica’s brother Jason also
had his moment in the spotlight
during the Wednesday afternoon
show when he took top showman
ship and fitting honors in the com
petition with those who have four
or more years of showing.
The 17-year-old had achieved
this feat at other county fairs but it
was his first showmanship trophy

The Eastern National Holstein
Sale offered a group of 4S head of
cattle with many outstanding pedi
grees. The sale staff of Bill Allen,
Horace Backus, Bill Nichol, Dave
Rama, Ken Raney, and Mike
Weimer put together a sale worthy
of the name.
The top-selling animal was the
first heifer in the ring. Tidy Brook
Sienna-ET, a March 21 heifer from
Mark & Alan Myers, Greencastle,
sold to Jed and E. Wayne Bay
shore. New Cumberland, for
at New Holland.
In the showmanship competi
tion for exhibitors with two to
three years experience. Holly
Hoover clinched the competition.
The 9-year-old daughter of Lois
and Marty Hoover of Denver had
also won the showmanship trophy
at Elizabethtown. She used
another sheep for that fair proving
that her consistent win is in her
touch not in her sheep. The family,
which includes two sisters and one
brother, raise about 40 sheep on
their farm.
The first-year showmanship tro
phy went to Jenniffer Zimmerman,
12-year-old daughter of Jay and
Joann Zimmerman of Akron. Jen
niffer and her two brothers keep
their sheep at their aunt’s farm in
Annville. Jenniffer also won the
trophy in the same competition at
Denver.
“Watch the judge. That’s the
secret,” said Jenniffer, who was
lauded by the judge for being
smooth and calm in handling
sheep.
