While heavy winds and rains raged outside the show tent, Troy Gelsin gcr held fast to “Pride,” a 1,130-pound Angus/Chianina/ Maine Anjou crossbred steer. In the end, Troy went on to win grand champion of the market steer show last week at the Reading Fair. Troy, 17, son of Larry and Delores Gelsinger, is a senior at Conrad Weiser High School. The steer was from the heavy light weight class. Show judge Howard Hoffman, farm manager at Dunwalke Farms, Fair Hills, N.J., said he belived the steers in the show were “more than adequate” for the market and would meet industry standards. But Troy’s stood out because of the steer’s top, smooth shoulder and rib, and depth in loin, accord ing to Hoffman. Hoffman, who raises Polled Hercfords at Dunwalke Farms, picked Kelly Dietrich’s “Bliz zard” (named for the Blizzard of ’93), a purebred Angus, as reserve champion. Kelly, 9, daughter of Jim and Karen Dietrich, Hamburg, is in the fourth grade at Schuylkill Valley Elementary School. Her steer weighed 1,235 pounds, from NEED YOUR FARM BUILDINGS PAINTED?
