Crusader with a Drawing Pen
September 27 is the birthday of Thomas Nast, the father of
American political cartooning. Born in Germany in 1840,
Nast immigrated to America when he was six years old
and got his first job as an illustrator at age IS. From 1864 to
1884 every presidential candidate Nast supported was victori
ous He used his politically pointed caricatures to expose cor
ruption and to work for civil rights for immigrants and
minorities. It was Nast who gave us the Democratic donkey,
the Republican elephant, and our modern conception
of Uncle Sam and Santa Claus. In fact, Nast
j not only drew the Santa we all know and
ri/IEIE. love today, he also conceived and created
IjillißyiC Santa's North Pole home and workshop.
