Cover Crop Symposium Oct. 24-25
STATE COLLEGE (Centre
Co.) —Penn State University will
sponsor a Cover Crop Sympo
sium here on October 24-25.
Growing cover crops offers
many advantages to the grower at
a very small cost.
Cover crops help mange nitro
gen. Depending on the species
used, a cover crop can either add
nitrogen or conserve nitrogen
already in the soil profile. If a
cover crop like hairy vetch is
seeded in early fall and left to
grow until the following spring, it
will add nitrogen to the soil pro
file for the following year’s crop.
A legume cover crop can add
80 to 100 pounds of nitrogen
which is worth $2O and $25 per
acre in added fertility alone. If the
soil profile contains excessive
nitrogen, a cover crop of grass
such as a small grain can help
capture the nitrogen and hold it
until the next growing season.
Cover crops also make good
feed. A cover crop if harvested as
a pasture crop or as a hay or
silage crop, and makes high qual
ity economical feed. Cover crops
which are grazed or harvested and
fed to livestock can provide addi
tional home grown feed, which in
turn reduces the amount of feed
purchased.
Cover crops increase soil

organic matter. If a cover crop is
plowed down or simply killed
and a crop is no-tilled into it, the
cover crop residue will add to the
amount of organic matter in the
soil profile. Cover crops which
are not plowed down but a mulch
for a no-till crop also help con
serve water during the growing
season. In addition to the organic
matter added to the soil, the roots
of cover crops help to improve
soil structure.
Cover crops also help control
weeds. When used in a no-till
system of planting, cover crops
will act as a mulch keeping many
weed seeds from germinating.
Cover crops reduce soil ero
sion during the winter months
when many Helds are not protect
ed from erosion. A good vegeta
tive cover will break the impact
of the falling rain drop while the
plant roots will hold the soil in
place as water flows over the sur
face of the soil.
If you are interested in learn
ing more about the benefits of
growing cover crops, plan to
attend the Penn State Cover Crop
Symposium, which will be held
Monday, October 24 and Tues
day, October 25 near State Col
lege.
