Cookbook Profits To Benefit Mission Projects LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff ANDREAS (Schuylkill Co.) Shelly Taylor knows what it’s like to be a missionary. She lived in Jamaica as a child when her parents were missiona ries. Later, she graduated from a four-year Bible college and spend two months at a mission station above the Artie Circle. Now, Shelly is married to Cliff and has two children, Rebckah, 3. and Luke, IS months. But Shelly hasn’t forgotten the constant need that missionaires Three-year-old Rebecca holds the cookbook her mother published of family recipes. have for finances. Shelly wanted to help support some missionaires. Like most young families, she and her husband have very limited resources. So, Shelly decided to publish a cookbook and donate the profits to mission work. She asked her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins to con tribute. They compiled about 300 recipes, which they had profes sionally printed in a cookbook published by G&R Publishing Company, 507 Industrial Street, Waverly, IA 50677. The cookbook is dedicated to the memory of Shelly’s great grandparents, Lewis and Eva Moyer, who both died within three weeks of each other in 1990. For years, about 50 to 60 family mem bers gathered at the Moyer farm for holiday meals. The Moyers had nine children. It is these children and their fami lies who contributed the recipes for the cookbook. Shelly grew up with six sisters and one brother. It’s traditional for her family to eat every Sunday din ner at Shelly’s parents’ (Russel and Diane Snyder’s) home. Her grandmother, Verna Moyer Faust, always brings the dessert. Last year, in order to make things more simple for the large family gathering, it was decided to have a cold meal. But the family missed the tradi tional dinner with everyone contributing. Shelly’s father said, “There will be no more of this. We need a cooked meal.” Most of the family’s favorites tend toward Pennsylvania Dutch cooking according to Shelly, but there are some other styles accu mulated from friends of the family. Shelly and her family now live in one of four houses on the Moy er’s family farm in Andreas. The Shellys do not work on the farm, but other family members, Donald and Daryl Moyer, raise grain crops, beef catde, pigs, and chickens on the farm that has been in the family since 1906. Cliff works as a sawyer, and Shelly is a full-time mother. The couple play piano, organ, flute, and other instruments for their church, Overcomers Holiness Church. The church also uses their building for a school. Overcomers Christian Academy. Cookbook profits will be used for its building fund; Tor the Dine Missions who work with Navajo Indians in New Mexico; for the Gospel Proclaim ers Mission in Mexico; and for the clinic operated by Holiness Pil grim Mission of Haiti.
