4-H/FFA Holstein Winners At Maryland State Fair
LOIS SZYMANSKI
Maryland Correspondent
TIMONIUM, Md. Judge,
Curtis Day summed up the 1994
Maryland State Fair’s Holstein
portion of the dairy show well. “If
all States had a show the quality of
this one, 4-H would be in marvel
ous shape!”
If there was any doubt to what
Day was referring to. one glance
at the quality of the Holsteins
being shown made it obvious. One
hundred-twenty youngsters, ages
8 to 18, from thirteen of Mary
land’s counties plus an exhibitor
from Baltimore City brought one
hundrecj-seventy-three head of
cattle before Judge Day for evalu
ation. By show’s end Shannon
Harrison’s three-year-old cow,
Md-Dun Loafin Moonshine was
named grand champion, and best
udder of the show.
Moonshine is out of C Logic
Marijuana, a cow that Harrison’s
brother and a friend had traveled
to Canada to buy. The cow was
bred to Bridon Astro Jet ET and
eventually Shannon bought out
the friends' share in the calf, mak
ing her brother, Paul Harrison
(Butch) and herself co-owners.
For Shannon, who is in her last
year of 4-H the win was a bitter
sweet one. She is saying goodbye
to 4-H, but she is going out with a
bang! Shannon plans to continue
to show on the open show circuit,
and the State Fair dairy champion
will be at her side!
Reserve grand champion was
Savage Leigh Counselor Star
owned by Christopher, (Chip)
Savage of Montgomery County.
She is a two-year-old, sired by
Carnation Counselor ET and out
of Savage Leigh Christmas Star.
Savage Leigh Counselor Star also
took the award for the best bred
and owned animal of the show.
The junior champion was Amy
lager’s How El Acres Lee Ruffle,
a junior yearling heifer out of How
E 4 Acres V T Ranson and sired
by Brookview Lee ET. Reserve
junior champion was Burlin
Counselor Mamie, an intermedi
ate heifer calf sired by Carnation
Counselor ET and out of D-Burlin
Delegate Missy and owned by
Holly Burall of Carroll County.
Other notable wins in the show
included Shannon Harrison of
Howard County as the fitting and
showing champion. The reserve

champion fitting and showing
exhibitor was Amy lager, also

When asked what he contri
buted the quality of the cows at
this show to. Judge Curtis Day
said “Families, and kids that want
to do well and do try their best to
do well and do do well! Family.
That’s the backbone of it all!”
