ROYAL (Juniata do.) —The 140th Annual Juniata Good Report County Pair was hold from Saturday, September 3, through September 10. This is a nostalgic time for the seniors of the area as they especially enjoy the sulky horse races and seeing the many agricultural exhibits in various buildings and on the grounds. It is also a time of excitement for the younger generations who enjoy the many rides and places of amusement, and especially the stock car races on the first Saturday, on Labor Day, and the much longer “Tuscarora Fifty” on Friday night to end the season. But what really makes a County Fair what it is supposed to be are the great number of animal exhibits, hay and grain, fruit and vegetables, baking, sewing, crafts, art etc. Unfortunately, as in other counties all over the state this year, there were no peaches to exhibit. However there were excellent apples, pears, grapes, plums and nuts displayed and beautiful cut flowers and potted plants. There were 512 exhibitors who had over 4,000 individual exhibits. Theje were also 8 Subordinate Grange and 4 Junior Grange exhibits, as well as 2 organizations. In the animal department there were 153 dairy cows, with 110 Holstein, 20 Ayrshire, 20 Jersey and 3 Brown Swiss. In addition, there were 19 beef cattle, with 16 beef steers being sold at the 4-H, FFA auction. And there were approximately 133 sheep, 16 pigs and 11 goats, as well as rabbits on exhibit. Competition was keen in all departments, and the most excit ing judging is done when dairy and beef cattle are shown in the ring where grand champions and reserve champions are selected in 4-H and FFA classes as well as open class. With her Holstein, “Bambi,” Juniata County dairy princess Missy Hostler won grand cham pion of the junior show, some of the other winners were: Mark Faulkner, junior show champion 4-H Brown Swiss cow; Damem Dough, grand champion 4-H Jersey cow; Averin Donough, reserve champion in the open division: Richard Crawford, grand champion Jersey in the open division; Mike Brant, junior grand champion Ayrshire and reserve grand champion yearling Ayrshire in the open division; David Clock, 4-H junior champi on Holstein of junior show; Jennifer Toms, open show junior champion Holstein; Diane Clock, first place in 4-H junior show for her 5-year-old Holstein; Zimmerman Brothers, grand champion Holstein and best of udder in open chow.
