Ayrshire Breeders Get
Opportunity to Voice Opinions

BRATTLEBORO.
Vt Ayrshire breeders are to
have an opportunity to air opinions
they have about the directions of
the breed, according to a series of
recent news releases from the
board of directors of the Ayrshire
Breeder’s Association, headquar
tered in Brattleboro, Vt
According to the releases, the
board is expected to dedicate the
majority of its fall business meet
ing to identifying key areas and
developing long-range strategic
plans.
As part of that effort, it has
announced that it has voted to cre
ate a breeders’ forum to be held
OcL 5 at the World Dairy Expo in
Madison, Wis.
The forum is to be held in a lent
on the Expo grounds, with more

through the Midwest Regional
booth, located on the expogrounds.
Members of the board and industry
leaders are to be on site to listen
and lead the forum.
According to a news release,
issues participating breeders
should be prepared to discuss
include: the position of the breed in
five years; the three most impor
tant areas upon which the organi
zation should be concentrating
effort; and ways in which the asso
ciation can better serve its
members.
“We encourage everyone with
an interest in the Ayrshire breed to
join us.” said Jim McConnell,
association president. "Conversa
tion topics will range from where
the breed should be in five years to
how the association can better
work together. The more ideas we

The association also recently mailed a ques
tionnaire to all people who have done business
with the association over the past 15 months. The
deadline for returning those questionnaires to
the association was Sept. 10.
“We know we have a breed with a sound gene
tic base and cattle that are profitable for their
owners,” McConnell said. “However, we also
know that we are not making genetic progress at
a rate comparable to the other major dairy breeds.
‘The officers, directors, and staff are presently
involved in developing a long-range strategic
plan for the ABA and the Ayrshire breed,” he
said.
“When the plan is complete it will include spe
cific goals and the steps necessary to achieve
these goals within a defined time frame. The
goals and the time frames established within this
plan will become the bench marks by which we
measure Ayrshires* progress.”

on the team, the better the game
plan will be,” he said.
And in the same effort, those
breeders who attend the North
American Livestock Exposition,
in St. Louis, at the expo center
grounds will have the opportunity
to voice their opinions about the
association and the industry. That
event is set to be held from 4 p.m.
to 7 p.m., Nov. 7. For specific loca
tion information, inquire with
NAILE staff.
According to McConnell, “We
feel it is vitally important that all
Ayrshire breeders have full oppor
tunity to speak up about where
they believe the breed should be
headed.
“We’re making it as easy as pos
sible for breeders to let leadership
know what they believe they need
