A2B-Lsncsster Fanning, Saturday, September 17, 1994 Parrot Wins Market LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Fanning Staff QUARRYVILLE (Lancaster Co.) Wednesday was April Leaman’s day in the winner’s circle. The surprised 11-year-old, in her third year of showing sheep, walked away with every top trophy and ribbon in the sheep competi tion at Solanco Fair. “I can’t believe it,” she said. “There were so many other fine sheep here that I thought would win.” From 56 entries, judge David Lytle chose April’s 132-pound Suffolk as the top market lamb. Accordingtto April, she thought the champion market lamb she calls Parrot was too skinny. “Plus, her mouth is funny like a parrot,” she said. But Judge Lytle declared Parrot as “one solid muscle from front to end.” April also won both the top fitter and the top showmanship titles. For this feat, she used a Suffolk named Jake. “He’s nice and doesn’t fight,” she said of Jake’s cooperation in the Showring. In his first year of showing, April’s nine-year-old brother Brad placed first with a 116-pound Suf folk in the middleweight market lamb division. Brad and April are the children of Jackie and Dave Leaman. The family has 10 lambs and five ewes on their farm. The reserve market lamb title went to the lightweight champion shown by Brent Landis. It was the first year of showing for the nine year-old, who is the son of Jim and Linda Landis of Quarryville. “I thought I would place last because this is my first year of showing,” said Brent, who raised Wayne Holds B HONESDALE (Wayne Co.)
