A22-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 17, 1994 LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff DENVER (Lancaster Co.) Glaser, Stoltzfus, and Bollinger were names that kept popping up at the Denver Fair Sheep Show on Thursday night. These were the names that sheared top honors dur ing the competition between 99 sheep and 22 exhibitors. The brother and sister duo of Jason and Jessica Stoltzfus had something to celebrate. Jason’s homebred Hampshire-Suffolk cross captured judge Barbara Gil bert’s eye. Gilbert, the animal sci ence professor at Delaware Valley College, bestowed the title “Mr. Loin,” on the champion market lamb. “The loin is where it counts for me,” she said. It was the first market lamb championship ever for the Stoll zfus siblings who have garnered numerous awards in sheep shows around the county for years. Always before, the awards have been for their breeding sheep. And it was a breeding sheep, that brought Jessica a trophy. Her Dorset fall ewe lamb, Penelope, won the grand champion ewe tro phy among all breeds. The win was a great birthday present for Jessica who celebrated her 14th birthday on Friday. Jessica has a flock of 15 Dorscts and Jason raises market lambs on their Elizabethtown farm. The siblings of Frank and Irene Slolt zfus said the show was full of sur prises. They expected Jessica’s Dorset yearling to outdo the fall ewe lamb. “In our family’s eyes, the year ling is a better sheep. But like, every show, it’s a different judge and a different day,” said Jessica, who was estastic with the win. Kelly Glaser swept all the Cor riedalc awards and went on to win capture the grand champion ram and the reserve champion ewe title. The 13-year-old from Lime kiln in Berks County is creative in naming her sheep. The champion ram Eiffle, named for Eiffel Tow er, was bred from a ewe named Statue of Liberty and Eiffel has a brother Rockerfellow. The reserve champion ewe named Amanda was purchased from Kin Brothers in Ohio. Kelly and her mom, Ruth Hart man, have a flock of 32. Kelly has been showing for six years and had the reserve champion title last year at the Fair. Keith Bollinger swept all the Cheviot ribbons and went on to claim the reserve champion ram trophy for all breeds with his year ling. His market lambs also took both lightweight champion and supreme titles, but his twin brothers, Jeff and Jerry, were mighty contenders whose names also were in the winner’s circle. Jerry took both mediumweight champion and reserve market lamb titles and ultimately the reserve market lamb trophy. Jerry also showed the champion Suffolk ewe and ram and the rcseve champion ram. His twin Jeff showed the reserve champion ewe. The Bollinger brothers raise 25 sheep on their Ephrata farm and have been consistent winners- for many years in several county fairs. Both Jeff and Jerry plan on getting married within the next year, but don’t count on their names dissa pcaring from the show circuit. Jer ry plans to show again, and Keith plans on buying, his brothers’ sheep to continue the family’s win ning streak. Kenton Reiff must be doing everything right. It was the At Denver Fair 99 Sheep, 22 Exhibitors Compete 17-year-olds sixth time to earn the champion showmanship title at the Denver Fair. A senior at Lancaster Mennonite High School, Kenton is the son of Sam and Elva Reiff of Ephrata. The reserve champion show manship title went to Radcll Peters of Middletown. The son of Ray mond and Rebecca Peters said his dad gives him pointers in handling the 10 head he raises. The amazing feat that Radell accomplished to win the reserve championship was that he was only second in his class, but when the first- and second-place contenders went into the ring for the final competition. Radell performed “outstandingly” and surpassed'the first place win ner in his class. As a third-year exhibitor, Ger ald Boyd placed first in the class and Jennifer Zimmerman placed first in the first-year exhibitor’s class. Farmers Dairy Foods, Inc. (FDF).” As a member-owner of MMI, members share in its profits, said Schriver. Throughout the year approximately 60 percent of the milk in MMl’s eight-state region is actually marketed to Class I fluid use. Farmers Dairy Foods, also owned by MMI members, turns much of the balance of the milk into butter, cheese, soft serve mix, nonfat dry milk pow der and other storable products. These products are then sold into Jessica Stoltfus, left, holds Penelope, the Dorset fall ewe lamb, chosen as best of the show in breeding ewes. The reserve trophy went to Keith Bollin ger’s yearling Cheviot. In fiscal year 1994, MMI marketed and processed more than 4.75 bil lion pounds or 533 million gal lons of milk and generated rev enues of $725 million. Brubaker, a dairy producer from West Alexandria, Ohio, reported that MMl’s board of directors approved the $1.9 mil lion cash distribution. “It was especially good timing because of die tough economic times some milk producers are experiencing,” said Brubaker. “This is a special check. Only those producers who marketed their milk cooperatively through MMI last year received this pay ment. It’s definitely a benefit of MMI membership.” MMI is the region’s largest dairy producer-owned coopera tive and the 73rd largest U.S. food company. Headquartered in Strongsville, OH, MMI is owned by 5,700 dairy farm families in an eight-state area including Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New York, and West Virginia.
