Co.) Dr. Dennis Murphy, pro
fessor of agricultural engineering
in Penn State's College of Agri
cultural Sciences, has been named
the editor of a new quarterly publi
cation. the Journal of Agricultural
Safety and Health.
Published by the American So
ciety of Agricultural Engineers,
the Erst issue will be available
February 1995, with subsequent
editions appearing in May,
August, and November. It is being
launched iff response to a growing
awareness of the unique safety
and health concerns in agriculture
and rural areas.
"The National Safety Council
reports that agriculture is the na
tion’s most hazardous industry,
with a work-related death rate 22
percent higher than the second
most hazardous industry, mining
and quarrying,” Murphy said.
“Fanning is not keeping pace
with other hazardous occupations
in improving its safety record.
This new journal will help scient
ists, engineers and others concern
ed about farm and rural safety
keep in touch with new research,
opinions and theories.”

neering, occupational safety, so
cial psychology, public policy,
education, industrial hygiene and
public health.
“The journal will contain scho
larly, peer-reviewed articles as
well as abstracts of articles from
other journals,” Murphy said. “It
also will feature listings of ASAE
and National Institute for Farm
Safety technical papers and a sec
tion detailing upcoming confer
ences, meetings, government
agency'activities and other an
nouncements.”
The journal welcomes articles
on original research projects,
evaluations of current intervention
and demonstration projects, litera
ture reviews, new or modified
theories and models concerning
agricultural safety and health
problems, commentaries and edi
torials.
Before joining Penn State in
1976, Murphy was employed as a
safety engineer by the Argonne
National Laboratory and the Crum
and Forester Insurance Company.
He was the first recipient of the
Packer Engineering Safety Award
presented by ASAE and has serv
ed as president of the National In
stitute for Farm Safety. Murphy is
