Quite a Lady
Anna Mary Robertson Moses was born on September 7.
1860, but the artist. Grandma Moses, was "discovered" in
1938 Although she dabbled in painting as a young farm
wife (her first large work was a wooden fireplace cover and
she used "the brush I painted the floor with”). Grandma took
up painting in her seventies because arthritis prevented her
from stitching the yarn pictures she loved to create From
such modest beginnings, this trail-looking but spntely old
lady with the indommablc spirit captured the hearts of
Americans and Europeans alike Her keen insight into
„ . nature and her pleasure in the simple things of
A life instilled hope in a war-weary world
Grandma Moses continued to paint until six
mijnths before she died on December 13. 1961
