plain whereas the pine tree was decorated with tinsel and glit
ter. The apple tree complained to God and God said to the
apple tree that he would give the tree a special gift. Betsy
doesn't remember the remainder of the story, but God ended
up putting a Christmas star in the heart of each apple. If you
cut an apple crosswise, you will find a perfectly shaped five
point star in the heart of the apple. Betsy would like to have the
complete story of how the star came to appear in the center of
the apple.
QUESTION Shirley Baer, New Freedom, would like
handmade aluminum made during the late 1930 s and 19405,
especially those with designs of animals, flowers, and fowl.
ANSWER Charles E. Wright, Duncannon, wanted to
know if the Gray Iron Casting Co., Mt. Joy, is still in business.
Scott Alleman, Lititz, writes that it is not in business. His father
worked there in the early ’6os when the plant closed. The
company made small items such as the stove Wright men
tioned in his letter, banks, door stops, boot cleaners and
removers that mounted on porches, wait shelves, door knock
ers, and pot holders. Perhaps the company’s most famous
product was the flying eagles that people hung above their
doors.
ANSWER For the reader who wanted to know how to
clean soot from painted dry wall, Ben L. Stoltzfus, Mechanics
ville, Md., writes'that he has products that work when most
other cleaners fail. For more information, write to him at 5395
James Rd., Mechanicsville, Md. 20659. Miriam DeLong,
Quarryville, writes that she used Fuller washing compounds
and it gave good results on her painted plaster walls.
