2-Year-Old Wins Holstein Championship At Southeast 4-H Dairy Show

champion Holstein at the 49th
Annual Southeast 4-H Dairy Show
here at the Kutztown Fairgrounds.
The animal, a senior 2-year-old,
bested the reserve champion
shown by Sara Hlavaty, Easton,
exhibiting a senior 2-year-old,
Keystone Southwind Gold (S:
Southwind Bell of Bar-Lee, D:
Keystone Tesk Glimmer, bred by
Keystone Farm).

Comman, Carlisle, said he enjoyed
the grand champion cow’s
“balance in the udder, high in rear,
a real sharp dairy animal with a tre
mendous amount of strength
throughout.”

The Holstein show was smaller
than last year's because of the
recent concerns over bovine viral
diarrhea (BVD), which kept the
numbers of animals down.
Also, at the colored breeds
show, Guernsey grand champion
went to Karen A. Wolfgang and
reserve to Timothy R. Smith.
Jersey champion was awarded to
Amy E. Plummer and reserve to
Erica Louise Lloyd. Milking Shor
thorn champion was Lizzie M.
Moser and reserve was Jamie S.
Yost. Ayrshire champion went to
Jill Vail and reserve to Kathryn
Elizabeth Young. Brown Swiss
grand and reserve champion was
Adam Spinier.
Two linebacks were also a part
of the 4-H show for the first time in
memory. They were shown by
Meredith Baily, champion and
Alison Krain, reserve.
At the show, 196 animals were
exhibited by 4-H dairy club mem-

nsylvania counties, including
Berks, Bucks. Chester, Delaware,
Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery,
Northampton, and Schuylkill.
Judges for the shows were Crec
din Comman, Carlisle. Holsteins
and Patti McMurray, Eighty Four,
colored breeds.
Among the animals exhibited
were 80 Holsteins, 16 Ayrshires,
17 Brown Swiss, 24 Guernseys, 51
Jerseys, six Milking Shorthorns,
and two Linebacks. Exhibitors
were also honored with master fit
ter and/or master showman
awards.
The blue ribbon animals from
each class became eligible to com
pete in the 39th Pennsylvania
Junior Dairy Show on Monday,
Sept. 26 at the Farm Show Com
plex in Harrisburg. At the state
show, southeast district winners
will compete against winners from
other 4-H and FFA district shows.
