Ivan Represents
National Board
ANDY ANDREWS “As a result of the merger of the
Lancaster Farming Staff four national organizations, what
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) happens at the stale level?” said
Dave Ivan, executive director i va n. “One of the plans is to help

Ivan will represent
the country’s 44 indivi
dual state beef councils
as liaison to tye NLMB
and implementing vari
ous Meat Board com
modity promotion activ
ities on a regional and
local level.
“In my role, I will
serve as a liaison
between state beef
councils and the Meat
Board, as well as other
national beef organiza
tions such as the Beef
Board,” said Ivan.
In a telephone inter
view last week with
Lancaster Farming,
Ivan spoke about the
efforts to “roll out” beef
promotional efforts
statewide.
One of the efforts
helped the beef industry
promote products at a
time, Ivan said, in June
when the maiket “bot
tomed out” because of a
“heavy supply situa
tion." Prices at the
maiket fell dramatically
for beef producers. At
that time, Pennsylvania
and 16 other states
joined in a “test market”
promotion effort involv
ing coupons worth $1
off the price of special
beef cuts.
A recent promotional
effort focused on the
Fox’s Supermarket
Chain in Middletown
and Harrisburg, accord
ing to Ivan, to provide
promotional coupons in
markets through the reg
ion. Ongoing are week
ly newspaper promo
tional efforts, as well as
newspaper, radio, and
television promotional
spots in urban markets
in Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh.
Ivan said that a prim
ary focus of his appoint
ment would be helping
with the long-range con
solidation plan of the
National Cattlemen’s
Association, the Meat
Board, the Meat Export
Federation, and the Beef
Board. He said that the
establishment of an offi
cial liaison between the
state offices and the
National Board
occurred four years ago.
The primary purpose is
to ensure that stale and
national programs work
in tandem, as well as to
act as a “sounding
board’’ for various
administrative issues
which may develop.
Ivan will help review
how national plans can
be implemented at the
state level..
