BETH MILLER Cumberland Co. Correspondent NEWVILLE (Cumberland Co.) The organizers of the first Cumberland Ag Expo were out to set up a small feir to showcase the talents of Cumberland County 4-H and FFA members. They believe that the little fair they organized at the Newville Fairgrounds was a success that really fit the bill. Duane Duncan, county ag ex tension agent, said he believes the expo did so well that it is all but certain that another edition of the fair will be held again next year. “We had a lot of pretty good ex hibits,” he said. “It will never be a huge fair, but I think it will be unique.” The expo was pul together by the New Carlisle Fair Association to replace the Carlisle Fair, which ended in 1991. Since then, there had been no local fair where FFA and 4-H members in the county could show their animals and their other talents. The expo featured a wide varie ty of activities which were all geared to young people, but also enjoyable for adults. For example, the first day in cluded activities that ranged from a rocket launch contest to a Civil War presentation to a Little Miss Contest, a 4-H Fashion Revue and a dairiy management contest. „ f * h <'V < A Brown Swiss Junior champions at the Ag Expo, left-right, Jeremy Garrick and Aaron Comman. ■'C 4 *1 » * if -"! b u. €j | -jj A & b< Jersey champions at ths Cumberland County Ag Expo, left-right, Emily Dietrich end Rebecca Comman. Cumberland County Holds Ag Expo On the second day there was a junior dairy show and a junior dairy showmanship contest, a hip pology contest, a presentation by the county 4 : H Horse Drill Team, a sheep blocking contest, and a horse pulling contest that drew a crowd of several hundred people. A junior sheep show and a showmanship contest, a 4-H Seeing-Eye puppy demonstration, a junior stockman contest, and a barnyard Olympics highlighted the third and busiest day of the ex po. The final day of the festival fea tured a junior goat show and a showmanship contest, a wildlife habitat/environment contest, and an obstacle course for draft horses. Duncan said the expo, which he said will be rated as a Class D fair by the state, should be able to cov er its expenses with state reim bursements and contributions from groups such as the county chapter of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. He said he was very pleased with both the turnout of exhibitors and spectators for the first-year event Duncan said the 250 exhibitors, most of whom were 4-H and FFA members, provided about 1,000 animal, farm and home, and other exhibits. He estimated that more than 1,500 attended the fair. “I think that our expectations were met” he said. •> nJS* i _ E? >K *'*% P*'-"' V\ * v*v a *pj kb r*- K' t ih j pr ✓ The Cumberland County 4-H Horse Drill Team presentation of the colors at the Cumberland County Ag Expo.
