Recently, we started looking for information
on the best tillage method to control flies in
freshly spread manure.
Much to our surprise, we could not find any
published research on this topic.
We would like to conduct some field studies
this summer to find out the best tillage method
for control of the house fly in spread manure.
We have done two preliminary studies on
single treatments using moldboard plow, chisel
plow, and disc. There is a definite treatment
effect. We need farmers to cooperate with us and
participate in setting up additional studies.
We are in need of land that has been spread
with manure from chicken houses and that the
farmer has the capability of utilizing different
plows and combinations of treatments.
If there are any farmers that are interested in
participating in this field study, please call Char
lie Pitts, Department of Entomology, Penn State
at (814) 863-7789. This will provide us with
information that will allow us to make definite
recommendations for the spring spread.
