winds estimated at 17s to 700 mpli The storm surge peaked
at 74 2 leet and the haiomelne pressure (70 74 inches) was
one ol the lowest evei iceorded in the (mil ol Mexico
( annlle was downgiaded to a senous ram squall as she
moved north into lennessee But as the "squall" crossed into
Virginia she eut loose with intense ram averaging 4 inches,
hul in excess ol 77 inches in some areas Camille raged (or 6
hours m Vnginia. devastating an area 40 miles wide and 120
miles long Over 400 I vitalities and $1 42 billion m damages
were attributed to Camille
