members gather.
She is the one with th£ reputa
tion of perfection the one who
will travel around the country for a
particular ingredient
She received a degree in diete
tics from Penn State many years
ago, and is the daughter of one of
the original four sisters who ate
together and are no longer living.
“My mother was the pie maker.
She was the Sunday cook,” said
Alice who cannot drive by the
street of her childhood home
where these family gatherings took
place without bursting into tears.
She recalls the fond memories of
her childhood days and the close
ness that developed between the
family members.
There was Aunt Helen, who
never married and taught school.
She was the designated dish
washer. Even when dishwashers
became the vogue, she insisted in
washing the dishes by hand before
putting them in the dishwasher.
Alice remembers her mother
saying as she cooked, “Go down
home and get some butter or
some eggs.”
That sharing between families
was so established that one of the
sisters once told her husband when
he wanted to move, “I moved far
enough away from home and I’m
not moving any further.”
The irony of those words were
that the sister had only moved two
blocks from the family home, and
her husband only wanted to move
to a house three blocks away.
As family members gather from
out-of-state, others are busy pre
paring such favorites as wheat
