Forage, Crops Information Available At Ag Progress

Visitors to Penn State’s Ag Prog
ress Days, August 16-18, can
learn about new developments in
forage and crop production in the
Crop and Soil Science Tent,
located at the end of East Sth
Street
“This year we’ie featuring plots
showing different hay and forage
growth as well as alternate for
ages, such as brassicas and chic
ory,” says Dr. Marvin Hall, asso
ciate professor of agronomy and
coordinator for the tent “We will
have sheep grazing on chicory in a
demonstration pasture.” Corn,
soybean and sorghum demonstra
tion plots also are located near the
Crop and Soil Science Tent.
The tent features educational
exhibits and demonstrations.
Exhibits explore soil fertility and
testing, nutrient management, pest
control, forage quality testing,
weed identification and other
topics.

Farmers can visit the “Ask the
Experts” booth to find solutions to
problems with soil fertility, dis
eases, insects, com, forages, small
grains and tillage practices. Spe
cialists from the Pennsylvania
Crop Management Association
and Penn State’s agronomy, ento
mology and plant pathology
departments will be on hand to
share research results and answer
questions.
Visitors to the Crop and Soil
Science Tent also can test their
knowledge using an agronomy
quiz board, with questions about
small grains, soybeans, com, for
age, and soil fertility.
Also at this site will be the Hay
Show, with displays of the state’s
best hay samples. Growers who
weald like to enter the show are
invited to bring samples to the
Hay Show drop-off point near the
Ag Progress Days east entrance on
the morning of August - * 16. All
growers will receive the results of
their hay’s evaluation.
