Celebrates Anniversary
WEST FRIENDSHIP, Md. The Maryland Simmental Association
celebrated its 20th anniversary with a field day at Howard County Fair
grounds on July 23-24.
The events consisted of a junior cattle show, a judging contest, pit beef
sandwiches, drinks, Maryland youth activities update, Maryland Beef
Council report, agricultural comparison of Maryland and Europe, a silent
auction, and various displays were featured.
Junior cattle (show judge Dean Bryant. Wye Farms, University of
Maryland, placed one cow/calf class, six heifer classes, and two steer
classes, which totaled 35 head. Judging classes and display animals added
23 head to the show.
Judge Bryant made RDM April Y 42 by Signal, shown by Raymond
Stough, York County. Pa. the champion cow/calf pair. The class was
sponsored by the Maryland Junior Simmental Association.
Heifer classes included Hargett Farms Class winner—Pond View Sar
ah shown by Shane Smithson, Harford Co., Md. Finch Services Class—

and banner went to Pond View Sarah, exhibited
by Shane Smithson.
In the steer classes, N. J. Richardson Class
winner was Tammy Nelson, Harford County,
Md. The Southern States Class winner was Jason
Smithson. Judge Bryant selected Tammy Nel
son’s steer. Buddy, as champion, sponsored by
Deerfield Farm, Marrioltsville, Md., with $l5O
award and banner. Jason Smithson’s steer. Buck,
was reserve champion, sponsored by Maryland
Livestock Equipment, Ml Airy, Md., with $75
and banner
D. Andrew Cashman and William Curry
placed the judging contest and selected nine par
ticipants for cap and belt buckle prizes. Three
classes were judged for type and three for EPDs
and weight.
Dr. George Pierson, Maryland Department of
Agriculture, spoke on current contagious dis
eases. Ann Kershner, the 1993 J. Fred Groomes
Scholarship Award recipient, compared small
European family acreages to moderate sized
Maryland farms, and meat, bread and processed
food purchases made daily by European house
wives compared to grocery store purchases of
Maryland consumers. Anita Wehrman, Mary
land Beef Council, spoke on promotions. Greg
Burdette demonstrated hoof trimming
techniques.

Lamb Pool
Location, Dates Set
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) The state
Department of Agriculture this week announced
the schedule for the 1994 series of Northeast
Lamb Pools, a tele-o-auction conducted for the
sale of graded lambs and slaughter-sheep.
According to a statement released Thursday,
the auctions are scheduled for August 26, Sept.
30, Nov. 4, and Dec. 2,
The pools are to be held at the Troy Sales Bam,
located in Troy, Bradford County.
“Lambs and slaughter sheep will be accepted
and graded from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the day of
the pool,’’ according to the news release.
Similar to what is practiced at traditional lives
tock auctions, staff from the PDA Livestock
Division are to grade the lambs and sheep using
USDA grading standards and the animals will be
penned in uniform groups, according to grade
and weight.
The sale itself is to be conducted by telc-o
auction starting at 3 p.m. each sale day.
