To Sew a Fine Seam
On August 12. 1851, Isaac Singer obtained a patent on his
rocking-treadle sewing machine. Singer's invention had
many improvements over previous, unsuccessful
machines it had a straight needle that went up and down, it
could sew a straight or curved seam, and it had a fool-operat
ed treadle to run the mechanism Unfortunately, it also had
the special lock-stitch that had been previously patented by
Elias Howe Singer refused to negotiate an agreement with
Howe, and a legal battle ensued. Finally, in 1854, Howe was
awarded a royalty on every machine manu
red Howe and Singer both did quite
financially and the public got a practi
il. affordable sewing machine.
