July 30, 1994 FFA HAPPENINGS West Snyder FFA Chapter Participates In FFA Activities Week The West Snyder FFA Chapter attended FFA Activities Week at the Penn State University to com pete with 1,300 FFA members across Pennsylvania. West Snyder FFA Chapter was ranked first in Pennsylvania based on their Program of Work and Chapter Activities. The chapter also placed second in the Building Our American Communities (BOAC) program. This program is designed Jo recognize FFA chapters who perform extensive community service work. Jenny Zerby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nevin Zerby of Beaver town, was elected to serve as the president of the Pennsylvania FFA Association. Jenny also received a gold medal in the state FFA extemporaneous public speaking contest, was named the north cen tral region beef proficiency win ner, and was selected as state win ner in for the Pennsylvania Sheep Proficiency Award. For her state proficiency award, Jenny received a plaque and $lOO. Her applica tion now advances to national competition. Glendon Carper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Carper of RD McClure, served as president of the West Snyder FFA Parliamen tary Procedure Team, which placed third in the state with a silver medal. Glendon was also named the north central region proficiency winner in dairy pro duction and on-farm work experi ence. Other members of the Par liamentary Procedure Team included Eric Leitch, son of Mr. and Mrs. lan Leitch of Beaver Springs; John Ewing, son of Mr. Clay Ewing, McClure; Lori Car per, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Carper of McClure; Joshua Heeter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Heeter of Beavertown; Jennifer Woodling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Woodling of Troxel ville; Ben Boonie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boonie of Beaver Springs; and Jodi Moist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Moist of Beavertown. Adam Wagner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andy Wagner, Sr. of RD McClure and Jeremy Hackenberg, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robin Hack enberg of RD 1 Middleburg, parti cipated in the Wildlife Contest. Elizabeth Hollenbach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Hollenbach of Beaver Springs, served as a dele gate to the Summer FFA Conven tion on the contests committee and placed third in the state in the Agriscience Student Recognition Program. The West Snyder FFA Chapter Scrapbook, completed by Elizabeth Hollenbach, chapter reporter, won a bronze medal. Dougherty Receives National FFA Scholarship Heather Dougherty of the Twin Valley FFA chapter and a 1994 graduatae of Twin Valley High School has been awarded a $l,OOO scholarshiop through the national FFA organization. This scholarship is sponsored by the Ructgcrs-Neasc Chemical Company, Inc. as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. Heather plans to pursue a de gree in animal bioscience at the Pennsylvania State University. Heather’s career goal is to become a veterianarian. Heather’s mother is Ms. Debra Dougherty of South Carolina. Heather’s FFA adviser and agricultural science teacher at Twin Valley is Ronald Frederick. Heather has been an active member of the Twin Valley Chap ter. She served as chapter secre tary and reporter. She ateo served as a county officer for two years. She attended the 1993 Pennsylva nia Governor’s School of Agricul tural Science at Penn State. Heath er was Star Grecnhand in her 9lh grade year. She has participated in prepared and extemporaneous public speaking contests, dairiy judging, livestock judging, horse judging, agronomy, land judging, and agricultural sales competition. She was chairperson of the chap ter Food for American committee which docs monthly programs for all district third graders. She at tended the Blue Mountain Co operative Council Business Sem inar and the Pennsylvania Co operative Council Summer Institute at Shippensburg Univer sity. Heather was a member of the chapter envirothon team which placed first in county competition in 1993 and participated in the state contest. She attended the FFA’s Made for Excellence Con ference and the State Legislative Leadership Conference. She has won both county and stale awards for her record books. She was a member of the national-honor so ciety at Twin Valley and an honor graduate. Tyson Wins Dekalb Award Melissa Tyson, daughter of Dona Tyson of Birdsboro, has been selected as the 1994 Dekalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award winner for Twin Valley High School. The award, sponsored nation wide by Dekalb Plant Genetics, is presented to the outstanding senior agricultural science student demonstrating superior leader ship, scholarshipo, and supervised agricultural program. Missy is a 1994 graduate of Twin Valley High School. She will be attending Mansfield Uni versity, where she will major in environmental education. As this year’s winner. Missy received a pin and certificate and her name will be inscribed on a plaque. The Dekalb award, often considered the highest honor an agricultural science student can receive on the local level, is presented at nearly 3,000 schools annually. Missy has been a very active and involved member of the Twin Valley FFA and many other school activities. She won 12 var sity letters for participation in sports while at the senior high school. This is one for each season for all four years of her career. She served as president of Spirit Club and was also a band front member. In FFA, Missy partici pated in county and state leader ship programs, pet therapy pro grams, Food for America pro grams at all three elementary centers, both the fall and apple festivals at Hay Creek, creed speaking, the water quality pro gram at Frankling and Marshall College. The Nolde Environment al Forum, and the agricultural tour for third graders. She won both county and state awards for her re cord keeping. She exhibited award winning mini-exhibits at the Reading and Allantown fairs. She won first place in the southeastern Pennsylvania interview contest and recendy won first place in the state contest. Receiving gold certificates were livestock judging, Angie Erb, daughter of Richard and Grace Erb, Elizabethtown, and wildlife, Christopher Ochs, son of David and Ruth Ann Ochs, Reading. Wildlife - Adam Weidman, son of Edward and Jennifer Weidman, Quarryville. This was the third time the school’s Hans Herr Chapter com peted at the event, which this year drew about 1,300 students from across Pennsylvania to participate in the various competitions and seminars. Lehman Metzler, who teaches ag science and technology at LMH, serves as FFA adviser. Grassland FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team Places First In State Competition Thirty-one Grassland FFA members traveled by school bus with their advisor Cliff Day, to Penn State University recently to participate in the 6Sth annual FFA Summer Convention. While at Penn State, the chapter members participated in contests and became involved in the decision-making process of the State FFA. Krista Hoover represented Grassland FFA as a chapter dele gate to the State FFA convention. Various contests were held during the three days of the convention. The Grassland FFA Parliamen tary Procedure Team placed first in the state, winning $l,OOO and a chance to represent Pennsylvania in the National Parliamentary Pro cedure Contest in Kansas City, Mo., in November. The team pre viously placed second in the east ern region of Pennsylvania. The team is comprised of Wade Esbenshade. Rob Heath, Linda Huber, Shannon Martin, Josh Troxell, Darrel Weaver, Jess Weaver, and Connie Zeiset. Biyan Hoover, Danny Lauder milch, and Brian Beck brought home a second place team plaque for their efforts in die poultry contest. They will represent Pen nsylvania at the Eastern States Exposition held in Springfield, Mass., in September. Ken Mardn also participated in the poultry contest. Connie Zeiset placed third in the senior prepared public speak ing contest, earning a gold medal for her efforts. Jevon Shirk partici pated in tractor driving, bringing home a second place silver medal. Priscilla Weber earned a bronze medal for her efforts in the horse judging contest. Also participating in horse judging were Jose Sevilla, Shana Eisenman and Mike Sensenig. In livestock judging, Justin Good earned a bronze medal, with Kerry Martin and Ronda Landis also participating. The land judg ing team composed of Deb Zim merman, Adam Gosik, and Jon Beaver placed eighth, with Deb Zimmerman and Adam Gosnik earning bronze medals. Megan Frederick participated in the dairy foods contest and brought home a bronze medal for her efforts. The aquatics contest was well represented by Grassland FFA with Gerald Wenger placing 4th and earning a silver medal, Anita Wenger placing 9th with a bronze medal, and Dean Weber placing 10th. Sherry Martin participated in the interview contest and Joel Fox participated in the wildlife contest. Proficiency awards were pre sented to Garden Spot students in the areas of ag electrification, out door recreation, and placement in agricultural production. Josh Troxel won the Eastern Region Proficiency Award in outdoor recreation. State proficiency awards in ag electrification and ag production went to Andy Henning and Wade Esbenshade, respectively. The Grassland FF,A Scrapbook, compiled by Lisa Homing, earned a second place gold medal. The Grassland FFA also received third place in Pennsylva nia in the National Chapter Rating category and their application will be forwarded to the National FFA. The chapter has the opportunity to receive a national award for their efforts at the National FFA Con vention in Kansas City, Mo., in November. Jason Reifsnyder, 1993 gradu ate of Garden Spot, completed his term in office as statewide vice president. He presented certifi cates of appreciation to his local FFA advisors Clifford Day and Robert Lauffer. Additionally, Jason bestowed the Honorary Keystone Degree, the highest award that can be given at the state level, to his parents Martin and Patsi Reifsnyder of Terre Hill. West Snyder FFA Chapter Ranked Number One In Pa. The West Snyder FFA Chapter attended FFA Activities Week at the Penn State University recen tly, to compete with 1,300 FFA members across Pennsylvania. West Snyder FFA Chapter was ranked first in Pennsylvania based on their program of work and chapter activities. There are 179 FFA chapters across Pennsylvania. After com pleting the chapter award applica tion and placing first in state com petition, the application will be forwarded to the National FFA Center for ranking on a national level. The chapter will receive either a gold, silver, or bronze emblem at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City for their efforts in the National Chapter Award program. The program is designed to improve the chapter’s program of activities, assist chapters in eva luating their accomplishments, and reward chapters for providing educational experiences for the entire membership. The West Snyder FFA Chapter also placed second in the Building Our American Communities (BOAC) program. This program is designed to recognize FFA chapters who perform extensive community service work. The West Snyder FFA Chapter cleaned up a local wetland, parti cipated in Operation Greens tripe, a national stream bank improve ment program, and organized a conservation field day for Beaver Adams and West Beaver elemen tary schools. r WB LEADERSHIP
