August 1 marks the completion of the first auto race around
the world Six vehicles started out from Times Square,
New York City, in February 1908, three French cars, one
Italian, one German, and one American car The route took
them across the country to Seattle, then by boat to
Yokohama, Japan, and from there on to Pans before return
ing to New York Only 88 days of the 170-day trip were spent
in actual driving, with an average daily run of 152 miles (the
longest day's run was 420 miles) American George Schuster,
driving a car made by the E R Thomas Motor Company of
Buffalo, New York, won the race with the help of his

5 slices bacon
cup vinegar
2 tablespoons water
2 tablespoons sugar
14 teaspoon salt
dash pepper
Combine spinach, onions,
and eggs in salad bowl
Cook bacon until crisp
Dram, reserving 3 table
spoons drippings in pan
Add remaining ingredients
to drippings Bring to boil,
stirring often Pour over
spinach and toss Crumble
bacon and sprinkle on lop
