also contributed to the
performance.
Commenting on the second
quarter results, Albert J. Costello,
Cyanamid Chairman and CEO,
said “Our agricultural business
was exceptionally strong in the
second quarter due to good
demand for our environmentally
friendly herbicides, principally
Pursuit which has seen greater use
in conservation tillage, and the
addition of the international busi
ness acquired from Shell.”
Worldwide sales of the com
pany’s Agricultural Group rose in
the second quarter of 1994 com
pared to the same period last year,
led by increased worldwide sales
of crop protection chemicals, pri
marily sales of products acquired
from Shell and higher U.S. sales
of Pursuit herbicide. Due to favor
able weather conditions this year,
some sales of Pursuit that would
have been expected to occur in the
third quarter of this year shifted to
the second quarter. The Group’s
operating earnings increased in
the second quarter of 1994 com
pared to the same period a year
ago due to the impact of sales of
products acquired from Shell and
higher U.S. sales of crop protec
tion chemicals. Due to the season
ality of the agricultural business,
which is concentrated in the first
six months of the year, perfor
mance in the first half of 1994 is
not indicative of the results to be
expected for the full year.
