But the two, who were both widowed and remarried when 31 years old, also 21 years ago, have kept the 57-stall quonset hut-shaped barn painted red with white trim, as well as an old corn barn, and they keep some landscaping to highlight the farm’s natural beauty. Though a public road cuts between the house and the barn, the paint of the buildings give a vibrant character and makes for an attrac tive contrast to the greens and browns of a rail fence and row of pine trees at the heifer pen. In addition, a towering, thick, horse-chestnut tree, 15-feet in diameter, Is a perfect companion to the farm’s stone house, built in the 1700 s. Sam and Miriam work the farm themselves, milking 44 mixed breed cows. The cows are, literally, mixed breed: with some registered Holsteins, but also some Jersey-Holstein cows, Milking Shorthorn-Holstein cows, and a couple of Brown Swiss-Holsteln cows. Samuel says he likes to keep a few of the cross-breeds to give the herd color. Besides, the production Isn’t bad at all, averaging about 19,000 pounds of milk. The overall herd average for 1993 was 20,315 pounds of milk, 717 pounds fat and 627 pounds protein. Samuel said he really likes a Jersey-Holstein cross and has one that only weighs between 800 and 900 pounds but made 17,000 pounds of milk. He also has another Jersey-Holstein, a little all black cow, that has, to date, made a lifetime record of 118,000 pounds of milk. They raise their own replacements and sell the bull calves at auction. The crops are corn, alfalfa and orchard grass and they are In the third year of feeding a TMR. The Longs have six children, all married with one child living at home. Congratulations Dairy of Distinction Award Winners! Fax (717) 866-7237 Phone (717) 866-6581 701 E.
