Dairy of Distinction Supplement to Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 30,1994—Page
Spring Lawn Farms, near Lancaster, Is a safety conscious farm, in addi
tion to being an attractive representative of the dairy production industry.
The 128-acre Century farm had been run by a three-way partnership of
brothers since 1980: Dave, Joe and Fred Garber, until Fred's death in 1990,
a year after he received the national award for farm safety. Joe said Fred
“was very active in farm safety and worked at trying to teach children,” and
he said that, at the farm, they continue to keep such practices a high priori
ty, such as making sure the pesticide storage area Is always locked, The
beauty of the farm is a reflection of the people and the Garber farm got a
good start in combining esthetics with functionality when grandfather Clar
ence Garber became one of the first In Lancaster County to put In terracing
and a conservation plan, following the lead of a cousin in Quarryville who
first put terraces on his farm. Located along Stony Lane, the pond is sited at
the bottom of a hill and has a small pond. A farm lane that run about two
tenths of a mile is edged in mowed grass and leads to the f reestall barn and
a double-5, automatic take-off, milking parlor, where the families and a
hired family milk 145 registered Holstelns on test, and keep about 100
young stock. The house was built In the early 1700 s and a huge Glngko tree
sits behind it. Grass Is cut and the weeds kept down along the buildings and
off the hardtop areas. A fair amount of landscaping also adds to the general
visual appeal. There are five silos a 20- by 72-foot, two 20- by 70-footers,
an 18- by 84-foot structure, and a 20-foot by 40-foot Harvester for high mois
ture corn. In addition the farm has two silo-type structures for manure stor
age. The Garbers feed a TMR, mostly haylage, corn silage, and double
cropped rylage. A few square bales are also made. The herd averages about
20,700 pounds of milk, 770 pounds of fat and 670 pounds of protein. On the
farm are Joe’s wife Yvonne and their children Joslah, 7, Charlse, 4, and
Kristen, 1; Dave and wife Shirley and their children Jennifer, 7, and Kendall,
4; and the hired couple, Mark and Tammy Dletrlck, and their children Jamie
Lee, 11, Marco, 8, and Lacy, 6. The brother’s parents are Jay C. Garber and
Lois Garber.
