Farm Photographs Of 1994 Dairy Of Distinction Winners
Looking toward major fertilizer cost savings, Carl Barnett recently fin
ished a circular manure storage pit measuring 12 feet by 75 feet, from which
he will draw the slurry to inject directly into his farm ground (about 350 till
able). The Barnett Dairy Farm, Todd, Huntingdon County, milks about 75
registered and grade Holstelns and maintains about 75 replacement heif
ers. Other recent additions include a 142-foot heifer barn with slatted floors.
DHIA averages are 20,237 pounds of milk, 728 pounds of fat, and 653
pounds of protein. Of the 350 acres of tillable ground, Barnett grows 180
acres of corn, 135 acres of hay, and 35 acres of oats. Carl farms with wife
Carol and daughter Christine and her husband Ray. James Garner is the
herd manager.

The Mapleton Depot location of Colonial Farm Estate, operated by
Samuel E. and Hazel S. Yoder, harbors about 350 tillable acres, including
rented land. The business milks about 95 of registered and grade Holstelns,
with about 70 replacement stock. DHIA averages are about 22,500 pounds
milk, 720 pounds fat, and 718 pounds protein. Samuel owns the cows and
equipment and rents the farm from Fred Parks. Samuel farms with wife
Hazel and children Emily, 3; Aremlna, 2; and Veronica, 7 mos. Also, Matt
Parks, 19, works on the farm full-time. Samuel said he recently Installed a
larger tank at about 2,000 pounds capacity.
