The Farley family, Charles and Diana and son Jeff, farm 300 acres south
of McKeen In Erie County. Their herd of 60 Holstelns average 20,000 lbs. of
milk, and they have a total of 125 head, Including young stock. They milk In a
tie-stall barn. The farm has been In the family 21 years. The Farleys say it
takes good management to keep a dairy farm going, especially with the
drop in milk prices. And It takes dedication.

Hawn Hollow Dairy of Distinction Farm operated by Terry and Denise
Hawn, Huntingdon, uses a flat barn, California-type parlor, milking about 49
registered and grade Holstelns. The farm has about 35 replacement stock.
The latest herd averages on DHIA are 23,040 pounds milk, 724 pounds pro
tein, and about 900 fat. Terry’s father, Alfred, raised beef on the 300 tillable
acre farm, and the operation became a dairy when Terry took over about 14
years ago. Terry farms with his wife, Denise, and children, Andy, 13; Terry
Jr., 8; and Wendy, 6. Also, Terry’s father, Alfred and mother, Betty live on
the farm, where they help out.
