Richard Payne farms 300 acres where he grew up. This new Dairy of Dls*
tinction is located near Crossingville just off Route 98 in Crawford County.
He milks 40 Holstein cows that average between 55 and 60 lbs. of milk per
day throughout the year. The farm has been In the family 50 years, and Pay*
ne believes management is the key to a successful operation. He grows
corn and beans for the cows but also sells a lot of grain each year. He also
grows alfalfa.

At Glenbern Holstein Farm, located near Newburg in Cumberland Coun
ty, Glenn and Bernice Myers and their son William, milk 60 cows and have
about that number of additional replacement young stock. The DHIA rolling
herd average ranges from 20,0001b5. to 22,0001b5. Glenn’s father bought
the farm in 1953, two years after Glenn graduated from high school and won
the state tractor driving contest. Hopewell Twp. has a paper recycling prog
ram, and Glenbern has become the community outlet for this recycled pap
er. Once each month, a farm truck Is placed at the township office for urban
residents to deposit newspapers and magazines. Glenn says the paper is
used to bed the heifers and works very well, especially In the hot weather.
