PA. Fair-Valley Farm in Blair County near Martinsburg Is not only a Dairy
of Distinction farm, but Randy and Karen Huntsman have also received the
Clean Water Award from the Chesapeake Bay program. They milk 105 Hols
teins in a stantion barn and keep the cows in free stalls. Herd average is
21,4001b5. Randy's father Brian bought the farm 48 years ago, and the youn
ger Huntsmans bought It from him this year. They farm 255 acres of corn,
alfalfa and beans to feed the cows. Brian and a cousin Dwight Heeter also
work on the farm.

This Bradford County Dairy of Distinction Is the home of Henry and Dor
othy Abra. Dorthy says they were chicken farmers In New Jersey prior to
their move here in 1981. But they have done well with their registered and
grade Holstein herd of 52 milk cows and 50 head of young stock. The herd
average Is 22,678 m, and they milk in a tie-stall barn. Their son Shawn gra
duated from Penn State and provides good help In business management
on the farm. A modified rotational grazing program Is used with cows kept
In the barn during the day and pastured In several different lots at night from
May to October. The Abras believe they get more feed into the cows during
the day by using this method. Calves go Immediately Into hutches and at
three months are put into an open-front heifer barn where they progress
through the pens until freshening at two years.
