Recently, Paulden Farm in New Enterprise, Bedford County, installed a
circular 10 foot by 70-foot concrete manure pit with the help of the local con
servation district and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Paulden Farm
farms about 210 acres (190 tillable) and milks about 84 head of registered
Holstelns. The farm maintains about 60 head of replacement stock. They
milk from a double-4 herringbone parlor, and DHIA averages are 21,600
pounds milk, 650 pounds protein, and 725 pounds fat. They’ve used a TMR
mixer for quite a few years. Twenty-six years ago, Paul’s father purchased
the dairy, and Paul took over the operation about 10 years ago. He farms
with wife Karen and children Stephanie, 19; Megan, 15; and Kimberly, 10,
with help from hired labor, including Keith Brown, full-time and Doug Ken
nedy, part-time.

Mid-Vel Farms, operated by Mark E. and Raymond R. Yoder, manages
about 210 tillable acres in Imler, Bedford County. They milk 55 head of
registered Holstelns from a tiestall to pipeline. The Yoders maintain
another 60 head replacement stock. Latest DHIA averages are 21,000
pounds milk, 670 pounds protein, and 750 pounds fat. The farm has been in
the family about 12 years, and has always been a dairy. Mark Yoder said the
operation may someday install a dry cow barn. Present plans call for a small
increase In herd size. Mark farms with wife Lois and son Jonathan, 18 mos.,
and Mark’s parents, Raymond and Sara Yoder. Sam Fickes is the full-time
herdsman.
