As we have a pleasant view
from every side of our house, I
have never put up any curtains. So
I have a good view in every direc
tion. And, we have no neighbors
that live near us.
Thus, the other week I called to
Allen, “Come quickly” and so we
both saw the big deer in our front
lawn. It had four-inch spikes cov
ered with velvet. It stood for a
minute and then disappeared
around the house, up the hill,
through the berry patch and be
hind the woods.
Another animal that we watch
ed earlier was a red fox. When we
had the big round bales in our
meadow, the baby fox sat on the
top of the bale and seemed to be
playing with the parent. There is
also an opossum that visits our
back porch at nighttime.

One not so welcome family was
a group of groundhogs that lives in
the middle of the alfalfa field.
Each day the little ones wandered
farther from their hole and appear
ed and disappeared in the green
growth.
Long ago my mother rescued an
injured mourning dove. When it
was well, she let it fly around in
the kitchen and it even sat on her
shoulder. We children were sur
prised as she was not a person who
showed a particular liking for ani
mals.
My one pet when I was a child
was a dog named “Rover.” He was
a black, brown and white long
haired dog. But, one day he got in
a fight with a group of dogs and
was badly hurt. He died.
Guess I’ll be satisfied with my
goldfish and the black cat in the
garage with two new baby kittens.
