QUESTION Barb Gayman would like more explicit instructions for a question she had asked previously. She asked what to do about food sticking to the plastic trays of her food dehydrator. A reader suggested that she line the trays with waxed paper. Barb did and the paper stuck so tight, is was not possible to remove it and resulted in unedible fruit. Actually, the legend of the Blue Hen Chicken dates back nearly 220 years, when soldiers of the Delaware Regiment establish ed their reputation as Delaware Blue Hen “fightint gamecocks.” Whether they actually carried Blue Hen Chickens with them on the battlefield is a controversial is sue among historians. Know ledgeable chicken fanciers will tell you that it is the hen who pass es on fighting baits to her male offspring in the world of game birds. So, back in the days when cockfighting was legal, a hen with champion male offspring was a valuable commodity. The poultry industry exhibit, coordinated and mannd by poultry personnel from the University of Delaware and University of Mary land, also included two movies de picting the history of Delmarva’s poultry industry. One showed highlights of the first National Chicken Cooking Contest held in 1949 in Salisbury, Md. and the other, “Chicken Goes to War,” traced the early days of the local poultry industry. A scaled-vers ion model showed visitors some of the new technolo ly in today’s modern chicken houses and compared production practices witih practices of past years.
