The date was June 30,1859, and the place to be was Niagara
Falls, as Emile Blondm attempted to become the first per
son to cross the Falls on a tightrope. Approximately 5,000
people were on hand to watch the French acrobat and dare
devil (whose real name was Jean Francis Gravelet) at his
first exhibition. Dressed in pink tights and a spangled yellow
silk tunic, and carrying a long pole for balance, Blondin need
ed only five minutes to cross the 2-inch cable strung 151 feet
above the Falls. Blondin went on to expand his fame over the
next year with a senes of increasingly difficult feats He car
ried a man on his back as he crossed the cable, pushed a
