niminant nutrition at Penn State.
Her extension responsibility
will include educational programs
in ruminant nutrition and forage
systems, with initial emphasis on
grazing systems and leadership of
a statewide integrated dairy man
agement curriculum in coopera
tion with other University and
county personnel. Her research
program will focus along the same
lines.

in animal science from the Uni
versity of Maryland in 1990. Her
research at Maryland dealt with
ruminal fiber digestion and parti
cle size reduction in dairy cows
and with digestion and utilization
of alfalfa and orchardgrass.
Holden’s doctoral research cen
tered on optimizing protein utili
zation by high-producing Holstein
cows grazing grass pasture; deve
loping supplementation strategies
for grazing dairy cows; and esti
mating dry matter intake by cows
on pasture. She earned her doc
trate in animal science from Penn
State in 1993.
As a graduate student at Penn
State, Holden finished second in a
field of 16 nationwide for a paper
she presented in the student paper
competition at the annual meeting
of the American Dairy Science
Association. She also was one of
the first recipients of a John O.
Almquist Graduate Student
Award and received the Universi
ty’s Graduate Assistant Award for
Outstanding Teaching.
During the past 18 months. Hol
den has served in Penn State’s
Department of Dairy and Animal
Science as coordinator of the
Dairy-MAP program, designed to
teach management skills to Pen
nsylvania dairy producers in a
workshop format Roughly 36S
people have participated in the
program.
