Star shaped core optimizes RFV.
With the new 4800
Series Round Balers,
you'll be baling hay
earlier.
You'll put more
high-protein leaves
in the bale for higher
relative feed value
(RFV). And, the star
shaped core allows
the bale to breath,
optimizing RFV at
feeding time, too.

LANCASTER (Lancaster
Co.) —On a hot day, Thursday,
100 or more farmers were on tour
of four good Lancaster County
dairy farms to see how they used
their Harvestore structures. The
tour was sponsored by Penn Jersey
't’roducts, Inc., New Holland.
The first stop was in Paradise, at
Neffdale Farm, where Roy, with
sons Rick, Ken, and Charles Neff
milk 85 Holsteins that produce
2! ,500 m 698 p 779 f. Their Slurrys
tore system with a ram pump was
installed in 1982. They use
chopped newspaper for bedding
and use no commercial fertilizer
on com ground where sluny is
applied. They feed high moisture
com and alfalfa haylage in a TMR
mix from their 20’ x 42’ and 25’ x
60’ Harvestore structures.
Over lunch the farmers on the
tour visited Glenn Good’s family
farm located southwest of Stras
burg where they arc erecting a new
dairy bam and three Harvestore
structures. The workmen were
building the one structure. In addi
tion, the new bottom unloader that
lubricates the chains with veget
able oil was demonstrated by Penn
Jersey officials.

In the afternoon, two farms were
visited: Singing Maple Farm, own
ed by Dale and Ruth Ann Stoner.
Lancaster, and Landis View Dairy,
owned by David and Lois Landis,
Lancaster.
At Singing Maple, they have 68
Holsteins that milk 20.400 m 658 p
765 f. Three Harvestore structures
on this farm date back to 1970
when the original 20’ x 30’ was
built for high moisture com. Last
year this structure was extended to
bccomea2o’xso’.lnl97l the 20’
x 60’ was built to process 50 acres
of rye, rained-on haylage, and
comlage. The other 20’ x 80’
erected in 1993 is used for haylage.
The belt feeder installed in 1974 is
still feeding cows after 20 years of
service.
At Landis View. Dave has been
farming with Harvcstores since
1970 when he built a 20* x 60’ for
haylage and a 20’ x 30’ for high
moisture com. This structure was
increased to 60’ last year. Another
20’ x 60’ was erected in 1989 for
ryelage and haylage. They milk
100 cows in a double-four parlor,
and they recently installed cow
mattresses in their free-stall bam.
