Making Home Improvements
This past weekend my husband
and 1 spent some time on home
improvements. We worked in the
backyard on our lawn and painted
the front porch railings and col
umns. 1 felt really satisfied to see
the improvements in our proper
ty’s appearance. It fell good to
work hard and to sec positive
results.
But the whole process of doing
home improvements started me
thinking about the really impor
tant home improvements that are

sometimes neglected. Sometimes
families spend a lot of lime, ener
gy, and money keeping the outside
house and property looking great
but forget to devote as much time,
energy, and money to sustaining
and strengthening the relation
ships inside that really make a
house a home.
Recently, 1 met with a group of
friends from my church, and we
were sharing thoughts with each
other on this topic. Each of us had
to answer a scries of questions;

where did you live? How did you
heat your home? What was the
source of warmth in your home?”
Well the first two could be
answered quickly, but the third
one look some thought. What was
the source of warmth in my home?
My ideas began to chum...family
celebrations around the kitchen
table, my Dad, late night singing
in our bedrooms, Sunday rright sil
liness, Mom reading to us in front
of the living room fireplace, the
daily rituals of saying hello and
good-bye.
All these things increased the
“warmth” in my growing up
home.
How would you answer that
question? What do you think is the
source ol warmth in your home
today? It’s so easy to let the hours
and days slip by and forget to
“feed the fire” that keeps our
homes and our lives warmed with
expressions of care and love. It

out this weekend to improve the
relationships within your home.
Here arc some ideas to try:
• Take lime to sit down with the
other people in your home. Ask
each person to share one thing that
ibcy’cj like to do this summer. Just
listen to the ideas. Absorb them;
don’t critique them.
• Complete a “gratitude check.”
Every day this week, ask each
member of your home to share one
thing they are thankful for.

The Ephrata Mennonite School
will hold its 10th annual benefit
auction on Friday evening, June
17, and Saturday, June 18. To be
sold arc Winross trucks, quills,
3-D handcrafted paintings by Lor
raine Rciff, Aaron Zook and Abner
Zook, services from businesses,
tools, an oak entertainment center,
toys, and many more items.
A Friday night pig roast sand
wich and ice cream sundae bar
begins at 4:30 p.m. A mini auction
will start at 5 p.m. Various certifi
cates will be sold at 7:30 p.m., and
Winross trucks at 8 p.m.
On Saturday morning, a ham
and cheese omelet breakfast will
be served from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. The
