New York Farm Bureau has been lobbying hard to win an agricultural exemp tion to the petroleum business tax (PBT) on the on-farm use of diesel fuel, residual fuels, and gasoline. According to NYFB President Charles Wille, “The exemption on the diesel and residual fuels, which was Governor Cnomo’s ini tiative, has passed the Senate. However, the refund on gasoline is another story. Farmer letters could play a critical role in secur ing the exemption on all three fuels.” With the legislature only weeks away from adjournment and the state budget still unsettled, Farm Bureau is urging every farmer to drop a note to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and New York Governor Mario Cuomo. Farmer letters are critical if this refund is to become reality. Send letters as soon as possible to Honorable Sheldon Silver, Speaker, NYS Assembly, Albany, NY 12248 and Honorable Mario M. Wille labeled the refund on gasoline a bread and butter issue for family fanners. “Small family farmers often have older equip ment that uses gasoline instead of diesel. A refund from the PBT for the on-farm use of gasoline would give smaller New York farm oper ations a much needed boost in net income.” Farmers in every Northeast state, except New York and Con necticut, ait free of fuel taxes on the on-farm use of petroleum pro ducts. Wille said that New York lawmakers should grant this refund, if they expect New York farmers to stay competitive with their neighbors and remain a viable part of local economies across the state. New York fanners pay the fol lowing rates for the PBT on the on-farm use of petroleum products gasoline, $0.1484 per gallon; diesel fuel, $0.0805 per gallon; commercial heating oil, $0.1403 per gallon; and heavy oils, $0.1242 per gallon.
