Dr. Timothy P. and Debra Jo Trayer of Denver were recognized by the Department of Environ mental Resources, Bureau of For estry for participating in the forest stewardship program. Forest stewardship is the wise management and use of forest re sources to ensure their health and productivity for years to come. Paul Troutman, service forester for the Bureau of Forestry, De partment of Environmental Re sources, presented the award at the Trayers’ property. The National Forest Steward ship Program was initiated by the National Association of State For esters. The program was authoriz ed m the forestry title of the 1990 farm bill and is administered through the U.S. Forest Service. In Pennsylvania, the stewardship program is directed by the Depart ment of Environmental Re sources, Bureau of Forestry, with guidance from a stewardship steering committee. The Bureau of Forestry has enlisted the help of Penn State to address the educa tion and awareness aspects of the program. Donald P. The Weiscr Forest Dis trict covers Carbon, Dauphin, Lebanon, Schuylkill, and Lehigh counties. Oaks said that stewardship challenges us to look beyond our immediate personal needs, so we can leave a living forest legacy for future g6nerations. Stewardship challenges us to understand the natural processes that take place in a forest. Then it challenges us to ensure that when we alter these processes, we do so in a way that continues to enrich the lives of all who depend on forests wildlife, humans, and generations yet to come. Troutman said that the Trayers have been managing their 65-acre forest for timber production and family recreation. Dr. Trayer said the properly was originally pur chased by his father Raymond S.
