Sixteen Junior and six senior 4-H illustrated presenta tions were presented by 24 4-H members. Five junior and seven senior prepared speeches were presented. Six junior and eight senior 4-H members pre sented impromptu speeches. The objective of 4-H Presentation Night was to provide a forum for 4-H members to practice and demonstrate their communication skills in a competitive format. The senior pre pared 4-H speaker who received a white ribbon award was Nichole Bodcnbcrg, Gettysburg. Junior 4-H members receiving a blue ribbon award for impromptu speeches were Zcb Eckert, Gettysburg and Jason Keller, Gettysburg. The following Junior 4-H mem bers received a red ribbon award for impromptu speeches: Gabby Wells, New Oxford and Rebecca Hung, East Ber lin. Junior 4-H members who received a white ribbon award for impromptu speeches were Ryan Zepp, New Oxford and Candice Flickingcr, Biglcrvillc. Senior impromptu 4-H speakers who received a blue ribbon award were Emily Miller, Nex Oxford; Abe Bucher, Nex Oxford, Kristin Johnston, Gettysburg; Michcll Branncn, Cashtown; Heidi Miller, New Oxford; Debbie Wilkinson, Gettysburg; Sadie Bucher, New Oxford; and Becky Frederick, Litllestown. This senior impromptu 4-H speaker received a red ribbon award: Eugene Hunt, East Berlin. Judges for the evening were adult 4-H leaders and parents. During the evening awards program, Debbie Wilkinson served as MC. Refreshments were served by the Cafeteria Equest 4-H Club and registration was done by the Mt. pleasant 4-H Club. Participants in senior and junior presentations, prepared speeches, and impromptu speeches will be eligible to par ticipate in Regional 4-H Presentation Night contest to be held on July 21 at the Cumberland Valley School near Mcchanicsburg. The senior presenters and preapred speakers are also eligible to go on to state competition. Adams 4-H Horse Club Adams County 4-H Horse Club members placed fourth in a Reg ional 4-H Horse Bowl competition held recently in Barks County. The Horse Bowl is a setting similar to the “College Bowl.” A tossTup question is presented to two teams. The first team to answer the question then receives a bonus question. For each ques tion answered correctly, the team receives points. When the question period is over, the highest scoring team is the winner and goes on to play other teams. The questions are horse-related and can be very technical. The Horse Bowl team design helps 4-H members explore horse sci ence details. The Adams County 4-H Horse Bowl team members were Debbie Wilkinson, Gettysburg; Samantha Lane, Biglerville; Teresa Sca mack. Gettysburg; and Bobbi Jor dan, Fairfield. The team is coach cd by Doris Wilkinson; Gettysburg. The Adams County team will continue to practice for the State 4-H Horse Bowl competition to be held at State 4-H Achievement Days on August 2-4, at Penn State. A More than 100 4-H members, parents, and leaders from Juniata, Mifflin and Perry counties attended the first annual Junior Livestock and Dairy Day held on Saturday, April 9, at the Juniata County Fairgrounds in Port Royal. This activity was a joint effort of the Penn State Cooperative Extension Offices for the three counties involved, with hopes of making it an annual event Among the workshops offered by extension personnel and volun teers from the agricultural com munity were livestock handling, feeds and forages, animal health, sheep jeopardy, blue ribbon record bools, world view of lives tock production, retail meats judg ing, dairy fitting, and beef fitting. A special program called “I Care About My Animals” was also offered to participants. The “I Care” program was originally developed by the American Farm Bureau to educate youth on how to respond to people critical of ani mal agriculture. The day offered four different workshops for the 20 or so kids involved. Matthew Day and Emily Dietrich gave presentations on the parts of a dairy cow, while Craig Walton gave a talk on the new show ring code of ethics. - Steve Comman gave a talk and demonstration on how to clip your animal for the fair, and John Ock er talked on health papers and the Shippensburg Fair. After a short lunch and compe titive basketball game, everyone broke out their clippers and work ed on four specially prepared heif ers. Steve Comman then took one of the heifers that had been shaved down and gave her a show clip job on the top line. On Monday. May 9, the County Wide Dairy Club then had their monthly business meeting, in which the workshop and the 4-H Roundup in August were dis cussed. Project books were the activity for the evening, as seven new members completed the level one in their project books. The next meeting will be June 13 at Tri-Day Farm in Shippensburg.
