818-Lancastar Farming, Saturday, May 21, 1994 FFA HAPPENINGS Maryland FFA Horse Judging Contest The Francis Scott Key FFA Chapter won the first place banner at the Annual Maryland FFA Horse Judging Contest held on Saturday, April 23, at Linganore High School in Frederick County, Md. The second place team was from the Walkersville FFA Chap ter. The contest is sponsored as a special project of the Maryland FFA Foundation. According to Contest Superin tendent Mollie Maslin of Perry man, Md., there were nine FFA teams registered with 36 FFA members participating. The con test consisted of a hundred ques tion test designed to evaluate the contestant’s knowledge and understanding of color and mark ings, lameness, blacksmith tools, tack, grooming tools, and parts of the horse. The students then judged three conformation classes and two per formance classes at the Pleasant Fields farm, courtesy of Doris Hubble of Libertytown. One set of oral reasons was given by each contestant on the first conforma tion class. The top three winning teams in the horse judging contest were: Francis Scott Key FFA, first; Walkersville FFA, second; and Linganore FFA, third. The first place team will repre sent Maryland in the National Horse Judging Contest in Kansas City, Mo., in November and the second place team will travel to the Eastern Stales Exposition in Springfield, Mass, in September. The top-scoring individual receiving a gold medal in the con test was Kristy Anderson of the Francis Scott Key FFA Chapter. Maryland FFA Crops Contest The Oakland FFA Chapter won the first place banner in the crops contest held April 28 during the Annual Maryland FFA Spring Judging Contests hosted by the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture on the College Park campus. The contest is sponsored by Southern States Cooperative, Inc. as a special project of the Mary land FFA Foundation. The high-sewing individual for the Crops Contest was Dennis Hite, FFA member of the South Hagerstown Chapter. Contestants were asked to place classes of alfalfa and grass hay, grade classes of tobacco, and take a 50-question written exam over general crop principles. The contest consisted of four phases. A general knowledge test was administered to evaluate con testants knowledge and under standing of the basic principles of producing and marketing flowers, plants and foliage. Participants were required to identify SO dis played specimens by technical and common names and then to solve 10 problems related to various aspects of the floriculture indus try. Finally, contestants were asked to complete five out of a possible 13 practicums, which included such activities as making a flower arrangement, taking a telephone order, potting of plant cuttings, making and packaging of a corsage, etc. Terry Suddath from the North Harford FFA Chapter was the teacher chairperson and super vised the contest scoring.
