The conference is open to all ag
professionals who advise dairy
farmers at the farm level, includ
ing consultants, feed company
representatives, veterinarians, AI
technicians, and millking equip
ment dealers.

Plastic Containers
Recycle Them
LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.) The
American fanner uses almost sixty million
plastic containers of crop protection chemi
cals each year. Most of containers go to
landfills or are burned at the farm.
Lancaster County farmers are being asked
not to throw away those plastic containers this
growing season. Farmers are being asked to
bring the containers to several convenient
sites in Lancaster County to utilize/recycle
containers into other uses.
The American agricultural chemical indus
try is the first industry in the nation to be
working for programs to reduce the amount of
packaging material in the waste stream. They
estimate that in 1994 recycling programs in
25 states will collect over 1.3 million pounds
of plastic pesticide containers at state approv
ed sites.
The Agricultural Container Research
Council (ACRC) is supporting recycling pro
grams across the nation to collect empty con
tainers and to find other uses for them. To
date, due to the potential for residues in recy
cled materials, most of the plastic collected is
being utilized in the generation of electricity.
As research finds alternative uses and assess
es the risk of residues other uses of the plastic
will replace the burning.
To be acceptable for recycling, plastic
pesticide containers must be empty, clean, in
spected, uncapped, dry, the label must be on
the container, and the containers cannot be
smashed or cut up.
An empty clean container is one that has
been triple- or pressure-washed. Containers
will be inspected by a Pennsylvania Depart
ment of Agriculture employee before they are
accepted. Caps must be removed and the con
tainer must be dry when brought to the collec
tion site. All containers must be in tact and
have a label showing its content

injectable antibiotic now available
for use in pigs. Use of the drug
must be on the order of a
veterinarian.
2. Although it is currently
labeled only for respiratory prob
lems due to Actinobacillus. Sal
monella, Strep. Suis and Pasteurel
la, the drug has a broad range of
activity.
3. There is no withdrawal period
for the product.
4. It is expensive. If you’ve got
respiratory problems that do not
respond to more traditional treat
ments and herd health programs,
you might consider trying Naxcel.
