    Bie-Lancaatar Fanning, Saturday, April 30, 1994
The other evening I decided to
forget responsibilities and go fish
ing. One reason was because my
husband was away for two days in
order to fish for trout at his
brother’s cabin.
Walking down through our
meadow to the Conestoga River, I
found the way was blocked as our
cottagers have put fences and
gates with locks around their
buildings. So, I had to climb down
a small ravine and then climb over
a fence. Immediately, I caught a

In Gloucester County
CLEMENTON, NJ Spring is
here as blazing pink blossoms
abound throughout Gloucester
County. “Peaches, the largest indi
vidual cash crop in the state are
centered in Gloucester County
with 7,000 acres,” said Jerry Fre
con, agricultural agent with Rut
gers Cooperative Extension of
Gloucester County. Mr. Frecon
said acreage has declined in recent
years due to a depressed agricul
tural economy and poor prices for
peaches but growers are more
optimistic about 1994. “We have a
beautiful crop of peach flowers
now that we hope will mature into
a crop of large attractive flavorful
peaches," said Frecon. “Unfortu
nately many things can happen
between now and harvest that can
reduce the crop like low tempera
tures during bloom,” he stated.

Then my line-got caught and I
pulled and pulled and finally tore
the whole thing loose. Next job
was replacing the sinker and
hooks.
Now 1 decided to find a new
spot as 1 hate to replace every thing
when it snags. So, I climbed a hill
and pulled myself “under” a high
livestock fence rather than take a
chance on catching my clothes on
peach orchards in Pennsylvania,
Maryland, and throughout the
upper Midwestern states but
southern New Jersey peach grow
ers were lucky because the trees
were well asleep, and tempera
tures as low as minus 11 degrees
fahrenheit did only slight thinning
of the blossoms said Frecon.
“Occasionally a grower’s disas
ter is a way of helping another
grower get a better price,” empha
sized Frecon. “The peach market
is very sensitive to the law of
supply and demand.”

and 1 fished there. A few more
small fish were returned to the riv

worm, but just as I lifted him from
the water, he tore himself loose
and got away.
The wild flowers were very
beautiful. I enjoyed the large
grouping of Virginia Bluebells
with their blue and pink blossoms
as they made a spectacular show.
The delicate Dutchman’s Breech

shaped flowers were in full bloom
too. And, a large patch of a
dandelion-type flower was also
blooming near the bank of the
river.

“I have nearly a full crop of peach
flowers and most of the growers I
have talked to in the southern part
of the state where 98% of the
peach acreage is expect a nice
crop,” he stated.
“Our peach bloom is just about
on schedule and if we don’t have a
frost we will be in good shape,”
said Haynicz.
