The American Jersey Cattle Club
provides services for its younger
members, especially in sponsoring
awards and in administering
scholarships.
In conjunction with its ongoing
youth programs, the AJCC spon
sors awards for junior shows, and
for state, regional, and national
judging contests.
The organization also adminis
ters 11 scholarships that are avail
able to Jersey youth.
The AJCC awards are available
only by annual request Write or

Awards
Specifically, the award program
provides ribbons for three places in
each individual female class and a
rosette for the grand champion
female for county and district,
state and regional junior Jersey
shows. There is also an award pre
sented in state and regional Jersey
showmanship classes.
Awards available for the
National Intercollegiate Dairy
Cattle Judging Contest include a
rotating trophy for the high team
members and their coach. The high
individual in Jersey judging is pre
sented a model Jersey cow.

Awards for the National 4-H Dairy
Cattle Contest are the same except
there is no rotating trophy.
Awards for collegiate, 4-H and
FFA regional contests at Eastern
States, National Cattle Congress.
Pennsylvania All-American,
North American, Pacific Interna
tional, and Mid-South Fair include
a laser-carved plaque for the coach
of the high team in Jerseys and pen
and pencil sets for team members.
The high individual in Jersey
receives a model Jersey cow.
The coach of the high team in
Jerseys at two-year and technical
intercollegiate contests receives a
laser-carved plaque. Team mem
bers receive pen and pencil sets.
The high individual in Jersey is
presented a color Ideal Jersey cow
plaque.
At state judging contests, the
high individual in Jerseys receives
a color Ideal Jersey cow plaque.
Scholarships
The AJCC scholarship
adminstration program makes
scholarships available to youth
who own at least one registered
Jersey and who are accepted or
enrolled in college.
Selection is based on financial
need and scholastic achievement,
as well as Jersey and related
activities.
The deadline for applying for a
1994 scholarship is July 1.

Three V.L. Peterson Scholar
ships for $750 are available to
youth who have completed at least
one year of college.
“Vic” Peterson has been called
the “Dean” of dairy breed rep
resentatives for his 25 years of ser
vice as an AJCC area
representative.
One $750 Paul Jackson Memor
ial Scholarship is awarded annual
ly to a youth who has completed at
least one year of college. Mr. Jack
son was a longtime Jersey breeder,
showman, and herdsman who was
devoted to encouraging junior
interest in Jerseys.
Jersey juniors who are graduat
ing from high school and have
been accepted by a college or uni
versity are eligible to compete for
two William A. Russell scholar
ships. The Russell Scholarship
was established in 1977 to honor
Bill Russell, a lifelong Jersey
enthusiast who was an area rep
resentative of the American Jersey
Cattle Club and National All-
Jersey Inc.
Three $750 Jack C. Nisbet
Memorial Scholarships are
awarded annually to participants in
the National Jersey Youth

Bansen scholarship to be awarded
to students working on an
advanced degree (masters or doc
torate) in dairy or animal science,
dairy manufacturing, or agricultur
al business.
The Bansen scholarship was
established in 1992 to honor
Bansen’s lifelong interest and
dedication to the Jersey breed and
the dairy industry.
In addition to these scholar
ships, the AJCC administers the

STATE COLLEGE (Centre
Co.) —The annual meeting of the
Dairy of Distinction program was
held this week on the Penn State
campus. Paul Nichols, secretary,
reported that the program of farm
beautification has been increasing
in usefulness since it was started in
Pennsylvania in 1987.
“We are improving the image of
farms to consumers,” Nichols said.
“And we are having more requests
for information about farms from
the media.”

words and will be judged on accu
racy of information, creativity, and
grammatical correctness.
