Shocking Behavior
Charged with "corrupting the morals of youth." playwright
actress Mae West was placed under arrest on April 26,
1926 What did she do to stir up the Society for the
Suppression of Vice’’ West, starring as a prostitute in her
play, Se\, was swinging her hips and licking her lips, although
it's not known how many youth were actually corrupted In
testimony against West, an undercover policeman stated that
she "moved her navel up and down and from right
to left" in a belly dance In April 1927, West was
sentenced to ten days in |ail and a $5OO fine But

and onions in broth in
covered pan until almost

ingredients and bring to
boil Reduce heat,
simmer, covered,
until shells
are tender,
