When the Nupps found a place
to board their horses, it was neigh
bor, Matthew Huff who came to
haul the horses to their new home.
“And he wouldn’t even take a
nickel.” Joel shakes his head in
amazement.
It was a few days after the fire
before the Nupps realized the
extent of their loss. Air condition
ers, fans, auto supplies and tools
were stored in the bam, as was the
children’s bicycles, a row boat,
fishing rods and ball equipment
Five saddles, bridles and tack as
well as a pony sulky are all gone.

FREDERICK, Md. The
Eastern Shore Dairy Princess
Committee is searching for con
testants for its annual pageant
As part of a new state program,
they will also be sashing young
ladies between 13 and 16 years old
who would like to represent the
area’s dairy industry. With the
exception of age, dairy maids
must meet the same requirements
as a princess.
Dairy maids will perform simi
lar duties as the dairy princess,
assisting her throughout the year.
There will be no competition for
the “princess-to-be’s” at the area
or state level.
Princesses make school and
grocery store promotions, speak to
farm and non-farm groups and
appear on radio and television.
They often make appearances at
spotting events and fairs. Region
al princesses participate in a train
ing seminar and will compete in

there wasn’t a trace left of the
boat. “It must have completely
melted,” Maura Jo said.
Mr. Nupp believes the goat,
known for her mischeivious beha
vior, and a heat lamp meant for the
lambs is the likely cause of the
fire.
Yet, the Nupp family has deve
loped a new spirit. They have dis
covered neighbors and found a
community spirit they didn’t
know still existed.
“It really hurts to lose every
thing like this,” Mr. Nupp says.
“But it makes it easier when there
are so many people there for you.”
“It makes your feel humble,”
Maura Jo” said.
“I told my neighbors, I want to
be on the giving end,” said Mr.
Nupp, “and they all say that I will
get my chance.
Right now, I want to thank
everyone... and if anyone needs
anything, I’m here.”

Qualifications have changed for
the princess program. Contestants
may be the daughter of one of the
following employed in a dairy
related industry (farm store dairy
cooperative, DHIA supervisor,
feed supplier, veterinarian, mild
inspector, etc.). Candidates may
also be employed herself as one of
the above or die owner of at least
one dairy animal or enrolled in the
dairy foods project in 4-H or FFA.
Contestants must be at least 16
years old and not reach her 22nd
birthday by Dec. 31 of the contest
year.
Application deadline is May 2.
